Four Baldwin teams advance: Daphne, Spanish Fort to host; Bayside, Fairhope to travel

After an irregular regular season, the 2020 playoffs are here with many local teams in  contention for a deep run. These teams are some of the most well-balanced teams in the state which will help them win big games. Four will be represntig Baldwin County in three classes: Daphne and Fairhope in Class 7A, Spanish Fort in 6A and Bayside in 3A.

The Fairhope Pirates (8-2 overall, 6-2 in regional play) will be traveling to take on the Central Red Devils (6-4, 5-1) in Phenix City. The Red Devils average 35 points per page but the Pirates have a more efficient defense as they allow an average of 16.9 points per game. Dual-threat quarterback Riley Leonard will be a playmaker on the offensive side of the ball for Fairhope. He will be key as they need to avoid turnovers in this potential shootout.

The surprise this season was the turn-around of the Daphne Trojans (9-1, 7-1) as last year they finished 5-5 but close to clinching a spot in the playoffs. This season, the Trojans are dominant on both sides of the ball. The Trojans offense, led by 2020 Mr. Alabama Football hopeful, dual-threat quarterback Trent Battle, average 36.3 points per game. Their defense is just as impressive and efficient as they allow 13.8 points per game. They will host the Prattville Lions (7-3, 4-2).

It has been a wild ride for the Spanish Fort Toros (8-3, 7-0) as they started the season with two tough losses but finished with an 8-1 run. The Toros are looking to get back to the 6A Class State Championship but this time to come out with a win. Spanish Fort will be hosting the McAdory Yellowjackets (4-6, 3-3), who started and ended the season with a three-game losing streak. The defense for the Toros continues to be efficient.

The Bayside Academy Admirals (8-2, 4-2) are making the playoffs for the 11th time in program history. This will be their 11th appearance in the last 13 seasons. This Friday, the Admirals will be facing the Pike County Bulldogs (4-3, 4-2) and their dangerous defense. The defense for the Bulldogs allows an average of 10.7 points per game.

Twelve teams (statewide) enter the playoffs unbeaten. Here is the first-round schedule Nov. 6.  All games kick off at  7 p.m.  Visit AHSAA.com for updates/changes.
