BIRMINGHAM – Most of the Bayside Academy Volleyball Admirals may not be old enough to vote, but the Daphne school’s unbroken state-title run turned 18 years old Oct. 31. The Lady Ads extended their consecutive state championship streak another year Thursday night by closing out the AHSAA’s 49th Elite Eight State Volleyball Championships with a 25-14, 25-15, 26-28, 25-15 victory over Providence Christian at Bill Harris Arena at the CrossPlex.
Coach Ann Schilling’s team has won a state title every year since 2002.
Senior Jacque Martin led the Admirals with 21 kills, 11 digs and three service aces to earn Class 4A state tournament MVP. Emily Buhl had 12 kills and Ella Broadhead had 10. Luci Wilkinson led a strong defensive effort with 26 digs and Buhl had 16. Setter Breland Dailey had 46 assists and five digs.
Providence Christian (42-13), coached by Bill Oldfield, was led by Autumn Mayes’ 18 kills and 28 digs. Anna Riley had 12 kills and 16 digs and setter Adleigh Mayes had 30 assists and 11 digs.
The championship was the 28th in Bayside School history, and like the 18-year consecutive title streak, it too is an AHSAA state record. Under Schilling, who played for legendary Becky Dickinson at McGill-Toolen Catholic, the Admirals also earned state titles in batches from 1992-93, 1995-96 and 1998-2000. Schilling surpassed the 1,500 victory mark earlier this year. The school also had AHSAA volleyball championships in 1981, ‘82 and ‘84.
