Baldwin County Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack to seek re-election

Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack announces he will seek re-election to serve a fourth term as Baldwin County’s top law enforcement officer.

Mack was first elected to the office in 2006 winning almost 70% of the popular vote and defeating a 20-year incumbent. He was re-elected in 2010 and 2014.

“It’s been the highest honor of my 30-year law enforcement career to serve the citizens of Baldwin County as your sheriff,” Mack said. “Together we have accomplished many things particularly in the areas of safety, reduction in criminal activity, increased patrols and children’s programs.”

Under Mack’s leadership, the Sheriff’s Office has implemented a number of community programs, including Shining Star Camp which was established to promote positive interaction between the Sheriff’s Office and local youth. With more than 2,500 children completing the program to date, the camp is designed to build life skills, instill confidence and develop healthy self-esteem through a wide range of activities.

In his continued commitment to school safety, Mack also partnered with the Baldwin County Public School System to establish the School Resource Officer (SRO) Program. The SRO Program provides five deputies to area schools dedicated to teaching anti-drug and anti-bullying classes and to ensure additional campus security.

Mack is a graduate of Robertsdale High School and Troy University where he received a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice, as well as a Master of Science in human resource management.

Prior to becoming a deputy, Mack worked for the Alabama Department of Forensic Science where he held three positions — medical examiner field agent, forensic investigator and chief forensic investigator. Mack joined the Sheriff's Office in 1989. He moved up the ranks, serving as a lieutenant and then captain, where he was designated as chief investigator.

Mack has served on numerous task forces, including the U.S. Customs Blue Lighting Task Force, a U.S. Marshall Special Deputy, Baldwin County Major Crimes Task Force, Child Abuse Task Force and as a consultant with many other law enforcement agencies. As a result of the increased employee and officer training during Mack’s tenure, deputies and investigators have also been assigned to a number of federal task forces.

Mack currently sits on the following boards: Baldwin County Republican Party Executive Committee, Robertsdale High School Bears Boosters, State of Alabama Attorney General’s Legislative Advisory Committee, Blakely State Park Board of Directors, National Sheriff’s Association Education and Training Committee, National Sheriffs’ Association, Alabama Prison Reform Commission, and the Thomas Hospital Foundation Board.

His awards include the Paul Harris Award by Rotary International, Rotarian of the Year, Service Above Self Award, Central Baldwin Man of the Year, Mobile/Baldwin Drug Education Council Joseph Treadwell Civic Leadership Award, and the National Eagle Scout Association Achievement Award. He was also named “Hardest Working Elected Official” by Lagniappe News for four consecutive years.

Other notable accomplishments during Mack’s time in office include reduction in jail overcrowding through Community Corrections Programs, a decrease in the size of patrol areas to allow interactive law enforcement and cut down on response times, as well as development of the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit which focuses on the County’s most severe crimes.

Mack and his wife, Sherri, reside in Silverhill and are members of Robertsdale United Methodist Church.

“I humbly ask for your support so that we can continue together working for our children and communities in this great county,” Mack said. “Thank you for your consideration and support.”

The primary election is set for June 5, 2018.
