BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Business owners heard a variety of topics during a workshop on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s Laws and Procedures, hosted by the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Feb. 21 in the city council chambers at Bay Minette City Hall.

The four-hour course covered the following topics:

• An overview of the EEOC’s laws prohibiting employment discrimination (Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Equal Pay Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act).

• The definition and discussion of unlawful workplace discrimination.

• The definition and discussion of unlawful employment actions such as retaliation, harassment and denial of a reasonable accommodation.

• The use of hypothetical situations for participant discussion.

“Disparate treatment is the most commonly reported type of discrimination to the EEOC,” said Eddie Daniel Abdulhaqq, outreach and education coordinator with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. “That is simply treating someone differently based on their age, race, religion or sex.”

Participants received a certificate of completion upon completing the four hours of EEOC training.

“We are excited to be able to offer this training for our member business and industry,” said Ashley Jones Davis, executive director for the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce. “If you have input for future training/workshop opportunities that could benefit multiple businesses in our community feel free to send those ideas along.”
