ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale City Council voted Thursday, Sept. 6 to approve a more than $380,000 bid for the resurfacing of streets in 2018.

The bid of $380,778 from Asphalt Services Inc. was slightly higher than the $350,000 price tag budgeted for the project. The council voted Aug. 6 to add $250,000 to the budget for the resurfacing of streets in 2018.

According to a proposal presented by City Engineer Greg Smith at the Aug. 6 meeting, there was $150,000 in the budget for resurfacing in 2018. Approximately $50,000 was spent on the cross-drain replacement on McAuliffe Drive in the city’s Industrial Park.

The city plans to resurface approximately 3.6 miles of streets in 2018. Streets scheduled for resurfacing include:

•Several streets in the Cardinal Hills Subdivision, north of U.S. 90, including Blue Jay Lane, Cardinal Drive, Eagle’s Loop, Lark Lane, South Lark Circle, North Wren Lane, South Wren Lane, Robin Circle, Swallow Circle and Swan Drive.

•Streets located in a subdivision south of U.S. 90, including Granite Boulevard, Quartz Lane, Sandstone Lane and Coral Lane.

•Iowa Street between East Chicago Street and Holland Street.

•Wisconsin Street and Michigan Street between Northbound Alabama 59 and Southbound Alabama 59.

•Nebraska Street between Northbound Alabama 59 and St. Paul Street.

•Ohio Street between Southbound Alabama 59 and St. Paul Street.

•Richmond Street between St. Paul Street and Palmer Street.

•St. Paul Street between Illinois Street and Brewton Street.

•Resnik Boulevard, east of McAulliffe Drive in the Industrial Park.

The city council voted unanimously to approve the measure at the Sept. 6 meeting. Council member Sue Cooper was not present for the meeting.

In other business Monday, the council approved an agreement with Swift Supply Inc. to lease part of the old Diamond Growers property.

Under the terms of the agreement, Swift Supply plans to lease two warehouse buildings and approximately six acres of land area for a period of 39 months. Rent will be abated for the first three months of the lease. After that, rent will be $13,525 per month or a total of $486,900 over the lease term.

Swift Supply will have the right to renew the term for one successive period of three years under the same terms and conditions of the lease, except that the rental will increase from $2.50 per square foot to $2.63 per square foot. Swift Supply also retains right of first refusal to lease additional buildings or property on the site, according to the agreement.

“If we renew the agreement for three more years, that’s a nearly $1 million value to city over a six-year period,” said Mayor Charles Murphy. “Not only will it mean additional income for the city, but it will also mean additional jobs coming into the city.”

In other business Sept. 6, the council:

•Approved a billboard request for St. Patrick Church.

•Denied a request for contract approval with Buxton Consulting Inc. for commercial lease properties.

•Approved a request to allow CFO Ann Simpson to look into the feasibility of acquiring a USDA loan.

•Tabled roster approval for the city’s Volunteer Fire Department.

•Approved a request for training burns with the Volunteer Fire Department. Police Chief Brad Kendrick said the properties were located outside the city limits and the VFD has already received approval from the owners. Kendrick said the city remains under a burn ban and the training burns will not be conducted until the burn ban is lifted in October.

•Approved an ABC License for Lil Veronica’s, located in the former Desmond’s location on Alabama 59.

•Rejected bids for sludge removal at the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant after bids came in at more than double the budgeted amount. Two bids were received for the project, budgeted at $310,000, the lowest at $638,525. The council voted unanimously to reject the bids and re-bid the project.
