Pirates win 2017 Jubilee Cup battle in overtime at Trojan Field

DAPHNE, Ala. — True to form the Eastern Shore rivalry was tied at halftime 7-7 and 14-14 after regulation. In overtime the Pirates stopped the Daphne offensive surge at the Fairhope one on a third-and-goal to force a go-ahead field goal by Trojans’ kicker Diego Guajardo.

But the 17-14 lead at Jubilee Stadium would not be enough for the home team in the AHSAA overtime format.

Fairhope quarterback Devin Mitchell rolled out on his first OT play and found Jackson Turner in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown and the 2017 Jubilee Cup win.

Fairhope head coach Tim Carter said the sudden-death winning play had not been run in a game all year.

“We had a little play we had been holding in our goal-line package and waited for the right time,” he said. “We hid the tight end and drug him across, he was wide open. Devin did a great job. He didn’t rush his throw and threw a very catchable ball. We had not showed that — the Ole’ Lutzenkirchen — play all year.”

Trailing 14-7 late in the game, Carter said his offense came through against a tough DHS defensive unit. The Trojans’s D was holding opponents to seven point per game through four games.

“We sputtered some early, offensively in the third. But I also thought that fourth-quarter (80-yard) drive—when we tied (14-14) the football game —was a turning point.” Carter added.

The overtime “Lutzenkirchen” play referred to former Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen who scored on a similar play against Alabama.

Class 7A Fairhope improved to 4-1 overall with their third-straight victory. Class 6A Daphne remained 2-1 in Region 1 but dropped to 3-2 overall. Both of the DHS losses this year were by three points or less.

The Trojans scored a go-ahead TD in the third period when Jay Pogue plunged in from a yard out on fourth down for a 14-7 lead. John Sherrell scored the Pirates’ second TD on a 1-yard run with 2:39 left in the fourth quarter.

Daphne posted the first points of the game when Marion Collins picked up and ran back a fumble in the Fairhope backfield for a 32-yard TD and a 7-0 DHS lead going into the second quarter. Mitchell also scored for the Pirates on a keeper in the second quarter to tie the score 7-7 before the half.

The Trojans lead the overall Eastern Shore Jubilee series 23-6. Both teams are off next week and return for the second half of the season with road trips on Oct. 6. Daphne travels to B.C. Rain. Fairhope heads to Baker.
