High-flying action to raise money for youth programs in Robertsdale

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — There will be plenty of high-flying action Saturday, July 29 when the Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Department hosts the Firehouse Rumble at the fire station, 22575 St. Paul St.

The event, put on by Revolt Pro Wrestling, with feature the likes of former wrestling superstars Buff Bagwell and Johnny Swinger and will be a fundraiser for the Fire Department and Police Department Explorers youth programs.

Other participants include Lucha Locura, Zane Stevens, Ox Haney, Chris Justice, Ryan Fury and The Boot Boys.

General admission is $10 with VIP meet and greet tickets costing $20 each. The meet and greet begins at 5 p.m., doors open for general admission tickets at 6:30. Bell time is 7:30.

“We are currently in a rebuilding phase for our Explorers program,” said RFD Capt. Rebecca Bauer.

The program, which is done through the Boy Scouts, was first organized in 2002, but was inactive for several years. The organization was reformed in 2012 and is open primarily to youth aged 14 to 18 who are enrolled at Robertsdale High School.

In 2015, the Explorers had 12 members. That number is now down to six, said Bauer.

The group accepts members from any area that currently feeds into Robertsdale High School, as long as that area does not already have an Explorer program. While there are some limitations, the Explorers train alongside adult members of the fire department and participate in fire department activities.

In addition to the Explorers members, the RFVD, under chief James Bauer, includes 25 volunteer firefighters.

The Robertsdale Police Department’s Explorers’ group was created about 17 years ago under Chief Alan Lassiter. After being suspended for two years because of security concerns, the group is back up and running with six members and expects to increase that number to 10 in the near future, said current chief Brad Kendrick.

Similar to the Fire Department’s Explorers, Kendrick said, the Police Explorers go through training just like regular officers.

“They meet twice a month and learn about everything from how to make a traffic stop, to our K-9 unit, to how State Troopers operate,” Kendrick said. “We strive to give them an overall picture of how law enforcement works, not just local law enforcement.”
