Hancock Whitney donates Thomas Hospital

Helps create respite rooms for staff

As healthcare heroes across the county continue to overcome the challenges of caring for very ill COVID-19 patients, Hancock Whitney Fairhope and Daphne banking teams recently presented Thomas Hospital with $1,000 to support the hospital’s respite rooms to help hospital employees manage stress and provide relief throughout their shifts.

The Thomas Hospital respite room initiative is similar to the Code Lavender program at many of the nation’s hospitals.

“Healthcare workers continue to face physically and emotionally exhausting days and nights as they not only treat people affected by the coronavirus but also take care of other patients at times when medical facilities or at or above capacity,” said Hancock Whitney Alabama Market President Guy Helmsing.

“We were anxious to demonstrate our deep appreciation to the Thomas Hospital team for their commitment to caring for our community with a gesture that would have a lasting impact. We hope this contribution will help them regroup when particularly difficult circumstances occur as well as manage the demands of what they do every day,” he said.

Code Lavender is a holistic program to help support physical and emotional well-being among all of the hospital’s staff. Equipped with massage chairs, calming lighting, music, and other amenities to reduce stress, Thomas Hospital’s respite rooms offer employees a place to escape for a few moments of relaxation and quiet time.

“The staff at Thomas Hospital has gone above and beyond to care for COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic,” said Thomas Hospital President Ormand Thompson. “We are extremely grateful to Hancock Whitney for their generous support of our staff during this time. Our goal is to provide staff with the opportunity to de-stress during their shifts so that they can better care for themselves and our patients.”

A part of Infirmary Health, Thomas Hospital maintains five respite rooms on its campus in Fairhope, Thomas Medical Center in Daphne, and the Thomas Hospital freestanding emergency department at Malbis.
