Pirate athletes, associates inducted into Fairhope High Athletic Hall of Fame

 FAIRHOPE, Ala. - Bob Baumhower, Stephanie Dunaway Bell, Erik Cortinas, Nathan Haywood, Daryl Norris and Michael Ulmer were inducted into the  Fairhope Hall of Fame Oct. 30, 2020 at Majors Field.

Baumhower and Cortinas were inducted for their longtime contributions to both Fairhope High athletics and to the Fairhope community at large. A former All-Pro NFL (Miami) and SEC All-Conference player (Alabama), Baumhower has long been a major supporter though his business concerns and personal donations of time and financial resources. Cortinas was also recognized as a longtime personal supporter of FHS sports and as a longtime volunteer and leader of youth sports, including serving as FHS Booster Club member and president.

Bell was a five-year starter on the fastpitch diamond for the Pirates from 2005-09. For all five years of her varsity play in Class 6A, she was an All-State Alabama High School Athletic Association selection, an All-County softball team selection,  a Press-Register Super-12 team and received a scholarship to the University of South Alabama. At Fairhope she played for Amy McKenzie and Jonathan Heflin.

Haywood is also 2009 graduate and a member of the Pirates’ state championship team. He was named to the All-State First Team in Class 6A. He was also named All-County, All Metro, Southern Shootout MVP and to the South roster in the AHSAA North-South All-Alabama championship of 2008.

Norris, a 2010 graduate excelled in baseball and football. He was a three-year starter at quarterback and selected to play in the annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. In baseball he was a five-year starter, a four-year All-County, state 6A hitter of the year, state player of the year and the 2010 Alabama Sports Writers’ Mr. Baseball. He was also named Gatorade’s Alabama Player of the Year and First Team All-American. He played for the Mississippi State Bulldogs for three years and advanced to the NCAA Word Series. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers and later played two seasons with the Detroit Tigers’ farm-system teams.

Penry is a 1983 graduate, was a member of the ’83 State Champion Pirates and was an All-State AHSAA Pitcher selection under coach Mickey Hudson. Penry went 10-1 his senior season with an ERA of 0.085 and struck out 15 batters in the state-title game. He played Division I baseball at Auburn and South Alabama. He also played in the 1987 National Baseball Congress World Series and for the Peninsula Oilers in the Alaskan Summer League.

Ulmer graduated in 2009 and was a six-year varsity letterman for Fairhope High’s Golf team under coach Jeff Hague. Ulmer was the  AHSAA Class 6A State Champion in 2007. He was named all-state four years and all-county six times. He anchored the Pirates to the state- runner up trophy in 2009 and finished fourth in ’08. He later played golf for the Blazers at the University of Alabama Birmingham.

The Pirates went on to defeat  Murphy 35-0 to close out the regular season. Fairhope (8-2) travels to Central Phenix City (6-4) Nov. 6 for round one of the 2020 Class 7A playoffs.
