Robertsdale Rotary to host annual rodeo this weekend

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Dust off your boots, throw on your hat and hold on tight with the Robertsdale Rotary Foundation at its 20th Annual PCA Championship Rodeo Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9 at the Baldwin County Fairgrounds arena in Robertsdale.

“We are looking forward to our 20th Annual PCA Rodeo this year and hope that everyone will come out and enjoy some family fun with us,” said 2018-19 Rotary Club President Jeff Plato. “We enjoy putting this rodeo on and look forward to it each year. Not only will you have some great family fun you will also be helping us help our local charities.”

Gates open each night at 5:30 p.m. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. and feature saddle and bareback bronc riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, ladies breakaway roping and barrel racing, capped off each night by everyone’s favorite, bull riding.

Entertainment for this year’s rodeo will be provided by legendary rodeo clown Reggie Purvis.

Better known as the Raging Cajun, the Independence, Louisiana native, who has been competing on the rodeo circuit since the age of 13, will feature Apply the Wonder Horse and Andy, the world’s smartest pony, along with all his funny antics.

The event is produced by Bo Campbell Rodeo and is part of the Ram Rodeo Series, sponsored by Chuck Stevens Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Fiat, Ram.

Advance tickets cost $10 for adults and are available at Greer’s in Robertsdale, the Summerdale Western Shore, Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, Bryant Bank locations in Foley and Daphne and the Silverhill branch of United Bank.

Friday night is Kid’s Night and children 12 and under are admitted free with a parent or guardian. Saturday advance tickets for children 5 to 12 cost $5.

Friday and Saturday tickets cost $12 on the night of the event for adults; Saturday tickets cost $6 at the gate for ages 5 to 12. Admission for ages 5 and under is free both nights.

The Rotary Club again hosted its Cover Art Contest with students from throughout the Central Baldwin Area vying for a chance to win cash prizes and rodeo tickets.

This year’s winner was Arial Corbin, an eighth-grade student at Central Baldwin Middle School.

Other young artists chosen to be included in rodeo program are: Joshua Sullivan, third grade, Elsanor Elementary School; Ryan Elizabeth McGilvray, sixth grade, Rosinton Elementary School; Sierra Johnson, sophomore, Robertsdale High School; Parrish May, sixth grade, Rosinton; Madison Freeman, seventh grade, Central Baldwin Middle School; Michael Manges, sixth grade, Rosinton; Nyseia McCall, sophomore, RHS; Aaron Ashley, third grade, Robertsdale Elementary School; Eli McKinney, kindergarten, RES; Whitney Wells, sixth grade, Rosinton; Kaylee Jones, seventh grade, CBMS; Memphis Avritt, junior, RHS; Kaitlyn Hadley, senior, RHS; Savannah Noe, freshman, RHS; Trenton Pouncey, sixth grade, Rosinton; Savannah Sanderson, sophomore, RHS.

Rodeo participants will also once again get the opportunity to win a Henry Golden Boy Long Colt .45 rifle, courtesy of Campbell Hardware. Participants will also have the chance to win two additional prizes, a Benchcraft Rocker Recliner (courtesy of Robertsdale’s Furniture City) and a one-night stay at Windcreek Casino & Hotel in Atmore, plus a voucher for Windcreek’s world famous Fire grill (total package value $330).

Raffle tickets are being sold through Rotary Club members or during the event. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20 and a drawing will be held at the Rotary Club’s weekly meeting Tuesday, March 12.

Local students are also invited to participate in the annual coloring contest, presented by Bryant Bank. You can pick up an entry form at the Foley and Daphne locations of Bryant Bank or check with your local school.

One girls’ and one boys’ bicycle, donated by Walmart, will be given away each night during the rodeo.

Through its Foundation, the Robertsdale Rotary Club has contributed to the Buckaroo Foundation, the Robertsdale High School Naval Junior ROTC, Roads of Hope, the Jace Waters Foundation, the Central Baldwin Education Foundation, Catholic Social Services, Women’s Care Medical Center, Baldwin County Child Advocacy Center, Habitat for Humanity and the Making Memories Hunt, among others. The Rotary Club Foundation has also contributed to several local school programs, including scholarships for local high school students.

“All monies raised will go back into the community to help charities in Baldwin County,” Plato said, “Including the William Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette.”

The club also provides continuing support for ARC of Baldwin County, primarily through sponsorship of the annual Doc’s Hot Trot for ARC presented by LuLu’s, held every year in June.
