St. Benedict Students Embrace the Opportunity to Serve During Catholic Schools Week

Posted

Elberta - Saint Benedict Catholic School students were eager to serve during this year’s Catholic Schools Week.

In accordance with the theme - Celebrating our Nation and Community - they identified opportunities to help organizations locally, as well as, members of the military serving abroad.

Their initial Catholic Week service project consisted of all classes preparing and sending care packages to an army troop stationed in Kuwait with ties to St. Benedict. Sergeant Angela (Krehling) Harris, daughter of their beloved school secretary - Rhonda Krehling, currently serves in this Middle East troop. She and her troop members were very grateful to be the recipient of these individually wrapped boxes which included a variety of items such as soap, razors, crossword puzzles, colored pencils, adult coloring books, chocolate, crackers, cookies, and game boards.

“The students were very excited to help others,” said SBCS PreK teacher, MaryBeth Corcoran.

The students at Saint Benedict Catholic School then participated in local service projects during Catholic Schools Week which included sending cards to several veteran facilities in nearby communities and donating children’s literature books, coloring books, colored pencils, crayons, and stationery to Family Promise - a homeless initiative that provides housing and services to homeless families in Baldwin County. The SBCS students collected $200 and donated it to Mary’s Shelter in Elberta - a ministry that homes battered women who are homeless and pregnant.
