ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Libraries Rock!

The Robertsdale Public Library will kick off it’s Summer Reading Program from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday with “Raptors: Birds of Prey” from the Freedom Ranch Outreach Education program.

Following the kickoff program, Library Director Cynthia Nall and staff welcomes boys and girls ages 3 to 12 to register from 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday with free hot dogs and a balloon launch.

Every year, the program runs through the entire month of June with events scheduled daily every Tuesday through Thursday. An estimated 200 to 300 participate in the program every year.

Back by popular demand this year is the library’s “Reading With Nayla” program in which children are invited to read to the library’s resident Golden Retriever.

Readings can be scheduled at 20-minute intervals. See your librarian to schedule an appointment.

New this year, if your child has read four times to a reading dog, colored a picture of Nayla and is able to answer questions about the library dog, they will receive a small stuffed Nayla.

Children must sign up ahead of time for this program. For more information contact the library at 251-947-8960.

Children can also participate in “The Reading Game.” Participants who read five easy books or two junior books will have their names placed in a weekly drawing for their age group (participants must read at their grade level or above and only books checked out at the Robertsdale Public Library will count toward the drawings).

A child may enter up to once a day. This weekly drawing is open to all children ages 3 to 12. Drawings will be held each Friday afternoon. This year for each entry the child gets in the drawing they will be able to spin the wheel for small prizes.

New this year, each time your name is placed in “The Reading Game” it is also placed in the drawing for one of the library’s three big Nayla stuffed animals. Drawing for stuffed animals will be at the end of the reading program.

Special events will be held every Tuesday, including:

Nayla’s Birthday: June 12 at 2 p.m. The library will celebrate Nayla’s eighth birthday with cake, snowcones, popcorn, balloon animals, face painting and games with prizes.

Reptiles Rock: June 19 at 10 a.m. will focus on how reptiles use sound to navigate their environment. Animals feature will include: European legless lizard; yellow-footed tortoise; red-tailed boa constrictor, and more.

Karate Demonstration: June 26 at 10 a.m.

Every Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m. the program will play host to performers.

Scheduled events include:

• June 13: Magician Russell Davis.

• June 20: David Stephens – puppets.

• June 27: Beaten Path – Exploration of rhythm driven music.

• Story hour will be held every Thursday at 10 a.m. Story hour is open to ages 3 to 12 and includes crafts and pullet shows.
