Holly Hills hosts annual banquet for Coastal Alabama South athletics

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Coastal Alabama Community College held the school’s annual media day at Holly Hills Oct. 16 to kick off their athletic programs and introduce new players on the Sun Chiefs teams. The Sun Chiefs are in their 53rd season since the institution's founding in 1966.
The Sun Chiefs women’s head basketball coach Linda Pitts is looking forward to a new season with more experience than last year’s freshman-heavy team.
“I’m very excited to get this season started. This is always an exciting time,” she said. “We do have some people injured now, but the rest have been practicing and getting ready for the season and now it’s like it can’t get here fast enough for us so we can hit the floor and find out what we can do.”
She does expect the injured players to be ready for the start of conference play.
“We should be 100 percent by that time. But this early (non-conference) part of the season is usually when we can put the freshmen out there to get a taste of what basketball after high school is all about. And that’s critically important in a two-year program because you have to depend on your freshmen a lot sooner. So, I hope we will be ready as a unit by then.”

Basketball for the Sun Chief Women tips off Saturday (Oct. 20) when Coastal South takes part in a jamboree in Montgomery. They travel again to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Nov. 2 (5:30 p.m.) before their first home game with Talladega Community College on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. They continue their home stand with Delgado Nov. 10 (2 p.m.) and Pearl River (5:30 p.m.) Nov. 12.

CACC men’s head coach Robbie Robertson said his team is young but he expects to start at least three sophomores who played a lot last year.
“Well, we’re young overall. Recruited very high quality, high character people and some very talented players, but not a lot of experience. At this level it’s still, as always about learning to work together well. So, with our freshmen it’s slow going for now, but I hope by January that the guys will have enough games under their belt and the game will slow down a little for them and we’ll be ready for the conference schedule by then."
One returner Zach Varnum will take on a leadership role this year, Roberson added.
“He led the nation in rebounds last year right up until the final week. But with him back we look for him to help us on both offense and defense. He really goes after every loose ball and that really matters in this game. (Sophomores) David Reynolds and Glenn Robinson also will play a lot for us and we have two freshmen that should make up our starting five.”
Local players on the roster include Jamerious Anderson from Bay Minette, Zion Bethel out of Robertsdale and Michael Meador (Spanish Fort).
The men hit the road Oct. 25 at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for a 3:30 p.m. start. They travel to another cross-state rival’s home gym Nov. 3 for the Pensacola State Classic tournament. Their first home game of the 2018-19 season will be hosting the University of Mobile Rams at 7:30 p.m. at Jack Robertson Arena. The Chiefs’ home stands continue on Nov. 9, 10 and 12.
Other Sun Chiefs coaches updated news on fall volleyball and golf as well as cheerleading and upcoming spring sports.

The new Coastal Alabama Community College system mascot “Sunny the Shark” who will appear at athletic and other events was also introduced.
