Daphne, Ala. -- Ten Daphne High student-athletes (four basketball, two volleyball players volleyball, one cheer, one football and one soccer) were recognized for their accomplishment of making collegiate plans to play sports at the next level April 12 at Trojan Hall. Surrounded by family, friends, teammates, Dan Haygood (the Mayor of Daphne), Dr. Meredith Foster (Daphne Principal), Kenny King (Daphne Athletic Director), Daphne Staff, and DHS Athletic Coaches, the athletes signed their letters of intent to officially accept athletic scholarships offered to them by the following colleges/universities:
• Chance Newman (Football) – Virginia Military Institute
o Daphne Head Football Coach, Kenny King on Chance Newman, “I am very
proud of Chance these past few months. He signed with a community college in

• Drake Wright (Basketball) – Coastal Alabama Community College
o “This is a great opportunity for Drake. He came to us from Spanish Fort for only a year and I wish we couId have had him for a few more years. However, we are thankful for the time we did have him and look forward to his success at the next level.” Daphne Head Basketball Coach Cedric Yelding.
o “I want to thank Coach Yelding for helping me on the side and believing in me.
When I wanted to give up, he never stopped pushing me. I want to thank my
parents. Also, the team and the whole school for taking me in this year.” – Drake
• Kendrick Buskey (Basketball) – Gadsden State Community College
o Daphne Head Basketball Coach Cedric Yelding on Kendrick, “Kendrick is a very
good player and a great kid. I’ve watched him grow and improve and I know he

especially like to thank Coach Yelding, he has been with me since I was seven.
We had some rough times but he has made me into a great basketball player

• Davon McMillan (Basketball) – Coastal Alabama Community College
o “Davon is a young man that is good, smart, and a strong basketball player. He is someone whose work ethic helped him through injuries and setbacks to become a very important part of our team and our success. I am very proud of him,” said Daphne High Head Coach Cedric Yelding.
o “I want to thank God for giving me this opportunity to play and do something I
love. During most of my high school career I was injured but Coach Yelding stuck with me and taught me how to play basketball and to be a young man. I want to thank him, my mother, all of my teachers, and counselors that inspired me and encouraged me to have faith.” – Davon McMillan
• Caylen Kidd (Cheer) – Coastal Alabama Community College
o Daphne Head Cheer Coach Angela Deveney on Caylen, “She is beautiful,
amazing, and talented. She was a varsity cheerleader for three years at Daphne
and was the core of our success. I love her and will miss her, but I am very

o Daphne Head Volleyball Coach Monique Williams on Bri, “Bri is an amazing young woman and a talented volleyball player. She leaves Daphne with 1200 kills and I hope that Coastal is ready because they are receiving a phenomenal athlete.”
o “I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to play this sport and I honestly could not have done it without my grandparents who were there for me the whole way. I would also like to thank my parents and family for pushing me to be the best I can and my friends for always supporting me.” – Bri Turner
• Sydney Omtvedt (Volleyball) – Southwest Minnesota State University
o “Sydney is going to do great, great things at Southwest Minnesota State. It is a little far and I am disappointed because I won’t be able to come and watch all
of her games. However, I know that the amazing woman and athlete she is will

o “Jacob is a special player. His athletic ability and commitment resulted in a
breakout year for him and for our team. The Coastal coaching staff is getting a
great young man and we are excited for him and his future.” – Daphne High

• Wesley Perrigrin (Soccer) – University of Mobile
o Daphne High Head Soccer Coach Cameron Williams on Wesley, “He is a stellar
athlete and a great young man. Everything that makes Wesley who he is will
serve him well at the next level and we are excited to see him continue to strive
and succeed at the University of Mobile.”
