• Knapstein named CLASS 7A MVP in 2017 soccer championship

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Baldwin County native and McGill-Toolen-Catholic senior goalkeeper Eva Knapstein was named the Class 7A AHSAA state soccer tournament MVP Saturday in Huntsville.

Knapstein led the Yellow Jackets’ defense with eight saves in the championship game for the 2-0 shutout against Vestavia Hills with goals by Mc-T teammates Angelina Piccini and Chloe Martin. Both goals came after a scoreless first half at John Hunt Park.

After four-straight seasons of reaching the semifinals but falling short of a state title, the Jackets — coached by first-year skipper Cheryl Flores — captured their first girls’ soccer state championship with the win over the defending champs.

On the boys side the Mobile 7A sweep was denied when Oak Mountain topped Davidson for the Class 7A boys title. Davidson beat Enterprise 2-1 in the Class 7A boys’ soccer semifinal in overtime (3-0 in PK).

2017 CLASS 7A GIRLS SEMIFINALS

McGill-Toolen Catholic 5, Fairhope 1

McGill-Toolen Catholic downed Fairhope 5-1 in the Class 7A semifinals Friday at Huntsville’s John Hunt Park to advance to the Class 7A girls’ championship match of the 27th annual AHSAA State Soccer playoffs.

McGill-Toolen (22-2) scored first on Martin’s goal at the the 14:33 mark. The Yellow Jackets followed with two goals by halftime. Brianna Freund of Daphne added another goal at the 43:52 mark to increase the Yellow Jackets lead to 5-0.

Fairhope (15-9-1) played well in the second half, picking up its only goal at 55:13 of the contest on a shot by Ellie Brown. Pirates goalkeeper Carly Huguley finished with 12 saves. Knapstein had one save.

Vestavia Hills defeated Oak Mountain 2-0 in their semifinal match.

2017 CLASS 6A BOYS SEMIFINALS

Pelham 1, Daphne 0

HUNTSVILLE – Despite eight saves by Daphne goalkeeper Brandon Bowers. Pelham’s lone goal was enough for the 1-0 shut out over the Trojans in the Class 6A semifinals Friday at Huntsville’s John Hunt Park.

Pelham’s Braxton Jeffcoat scored the match’s only goal at the 22:19 mark. He was assisted by Irvin Rodriguez. Both teams played a physical game defensively with Daphne (15-12-1) committing 10 fouls to Pelham’s 12. The Trojans, coached by Cameron Williams, also committed 2 caution penalties to Pelham's 3.

Daphne made a late push in the final seconds coming up short on two shots on goal and a failed corner kick as Pelham preserved the win.

Pellham’s Seth Torman had two saves. Pelham went on to defeat Cullman 2-0 in the final.

CLASS 1A/3A BOYS SEMIFINALS

Indian Springs 3, Bayside Academy 1

Bayside Academy (15-9-2) tied the match at 1-1 early in the second half when Dawson Jellenc scored for the Admirals. Jack Smith had two saves for Bayside’s Admirals (15-9-2).
