SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Teion Stanton hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left in overtime to put Daphne up by three for the Class 6A, Area 2 win at Spanish Fort Friday night.

For the second time this season Daphne won the neighboring rivalry in overtime. The No. 3-ranked Trojans improved to 24-2 overall and 7-0 in league play. Their only losses were to Spanish Fort and LeFlore in December.

Daphne coach Cedric Yelding said the Toros are always tough, especially at home.

"We hadn't won here since 2014,” he said. “So to get a win at their home court was huge. It was big to win and clinch (Area 2) in front of this crowd. The kids competed until the end. Teion Stanton stepped up big with two free throws at the end of the game, but that is what I expect of our seniors. We didn't make our free throws during the game, but we made the (overtime) free throws that counted. I am extremely proud of our team. "

Dre Graves led Daphne’s scoring with a game-high 20 points while Deontaye Buskey had 10 and Stanton finished with eight.

Spanish Fort was led by freshman Kris Draine with 14 points while Briggs McMullen added 10 and Trae Barry added eight for the Toros.

Spanish Fort coach Dru Powell said his team played hard, but fell short in overtime with missed free throws.

"We only hit 4-of-11 free throws from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and overtime combined,” he said. “When you are playing a good team like Daphne, it’s hard to win when you do that. I'm proud of my guys, though. They played hard, but we didn't make our foul shots and it cost us."

Daphne will host the 6A Area 2 tournament now set for Feb. 7, 9 and 11.
