Senior Center hosts soup contest, soup kitchen

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama -- The George P. Thames Senior Center held its eighth annual soup contest Friday, Feb. 24 at the senior center in Robertsdale. Martha Young took home first place for her corn and ham chowder, followed by Virgie Peterson in second; Judy Rabren, third; and Dot Thorne, fourth. A total of 14 contestants vied for the top prize in Friday’s contest. Additional contestants were Gloria Knapp, Dorothy McDougall, Liz Andersen, Steve Metz, Olivia Campbell, Claudia Barbee, Clara Cox, Carole Jones and Barbara Campbell. Judges were Gerald Ardoin, owner of Café Acadiana in Silverhill; chef Breck Finley; Kim Smith and Melissa McKenna representing Covenant Hospice. Following the contest, a full house enjoyed the Senior Center’s monthly Soup Kitchen and were able to sample all of the soups in the contest, plus a few more. The George P. Thames Senior Center hosts events daily, weekly and monthly at the center, located at 22651 E. Chicago St. in Robertsdale.
