Spanish Fort city leaders are considering changes to the city’s stormwater ordinance to help cutdown on illicit discharges into the city’s system.
“This is one of the projects we’ve been working on,” City Attorney David Connor said. “The Planning Commission has spent a considerable amount of time reviewing this.”
Mayor Mike McMillan said the ordinance changes are intended to be fully comprehensive.
“This should cover everything, even dumping your pool water out into the storm drain,” McMillan said. “It also gives our people teeth to enforce this, which we don’t really have right now.”
Councilwoman Mary Brabner questioned whether handbills thrown in driveways would be considered as a part of the changes.
“Those Mobile Press Register things that they throw out in your yard that you don’t want are certainly a problem,” Brabner said. “We have to do something about that immediately.”
Connor told her handbills like that would be prohibited if the ordinance changes were passed.
McMillan told the council he would be happy to call a special called work session to fully discuss the changes and asked them to study the proposal carefully over the next few weeks.
