Wilbourne Rose Trail boasts new cypress swings

Posted

FOLEY — There are three more reasons to visit the Wilbourne Rose Trail, a nearly one-mile walking trail lined with heritage roses tucked away behind commercial buildings in Foley. Thanks to a creative partnership between the Foley Rotary Club, the Foley High School career technology class, a local business and the city, three new cypress swings are hanging from attractive pergolas along the rose trail for people to enjoy.

The swing project was chosen and funded by the Foley Rotary Club. The project came about because the Rotary Club wanted to sponsor a project to benefit the community, according to David Vosloh, who spearheaded the venture.

Lance Lipscomb, instructor for the Foley High School Construction Framing class, which is a part of the career technology curriculum, agreed to have the class build the swings as a class project.

Vosloh arranged with Karen and Doug Hall of Five Oaks Cypress Patio Furniture in Loxley to allow the students to use their swing design. Audra Isle, their daughter, instructed the 30-member class in building the swings. Some of the students were hesitant at first about having a small woman as a teacher for a construction class, according to Vosloh. But the class quickly learned that construction know-how and power tool skills trump physical size. She earned the respect of the entire class before it was over, said Vosloh.

After completion, Foley’s horticulture and public works departments installed the swings on the trail.

With the three new swings now situated along the rose trail, walkers have a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the roses a little longer.

One of the new swings sits near the main entrance to the northern section of the Wilbourne Rose Trail, located on East Violet Avenue, just north of Heritage Park in downtown Foley. Free parking is available all around Heritage Park. Another swing sits on the southern part of the trail, located between East Orange Avenue and East Myrtle Avenue, one block east of Highway 59. Free parking is available at 200 East Orange Avenue, adjacent to Foley’s new dog park.
