DAPHNE — Bayside Academy took a 36-20 homecoming win over Excel at Freedom Field Friday night. On the Admirals first drive and after nearly a year on the mend, Connor Sirmon punched through the Excel Panthers defensive front and broke for a 55-yard touchdown run on his first hand off since sidelined by shoulder surgery. But the play was called back on an Admirals penalty.

Sirmon went on to pick up 135 rushing yards, alternating runs with fellow senior classmate Seth Shirley who finished with 118 yards and two touchdowns.

The first Bayside drive of 57 yards was capped with a 7-yard touchdown run by Nathan Cook. Shirley converted the two-point try for an 8-0 Admirals lead two minutes, 39 seconds in.

A Panther fumble, recovered and advanced by Trevor Mason, was returned to the Excel 41. Shirley scored nine plays later on a 7-yard run. John Bryant scored with 41 seconds left in the first quarter on a 20-yard run. Shirley added his second touchdown on another 7-yard run 1:47 before the half.

Excel added a 58-yard touchdown pass, but missed the extra point to make it 29-6 at the half. Bayside dominated possession in the third quarter, but didn’t score. Cooke broke outside in the second minute of the fourth period for a 20-yard touchdown run. Ben James’ four PAT kicks gave the Admirals a 36-6 lead. The Panthers added two touchdowns late in the game for the final score.

The Admirals had suffered their first Region 1 loss at Mobile Christian last week. But bounced back with the homecoming win to improve to 2-1 in Region 1 play and 3-2 overall. The Panthers fell to 0-4. Bayside has week six off.

Bayside also welcomed their newest Hall of Fame members: John A. Robertson Jr. Class of ‘75, Ameri’ca Jones Tickle ‘94, Andy Schmidt '94, David Adams ‘81, Reid Cater 2004.
