Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo said farewell to 16-year-old male lion Simba Oct. 9. The zoo made the announcement of Simba’s passing in a statement on the Facebook.
Simba had recently been diagnosed with cancer. The veterinary team performed exploratory surgery and found the cancer had spread to the abdominal and thoracic cavities and the difficult decision was made to euthanize him.
“Simba arrived at the zoo in 2005 as a youngster. Playful and loving as he grew up at our former facility, he quickly became a favorite both impressing and inspiring our guests. Simba continued that role prominently at our new facility where his roars could be head throughout the zoo. His majestic stature impressed all who saw him and even more so when he was atop his favorite rock. As one of the zoo’s more iconic animals, he was deeply loved by our staff and guests. While any loss among our animal community is painful, Simba’s loss is exceptionally difficult for the zoo and its staff. Please keep the zoo family in your thoughts and prayers as we struggle with the heartbreaking loss of our beloved Simba.”
