AMVETS Post 2018 honors Elberta councilmember Vicky Helms Norris

Posted

ELBERTA - Elberta councilmember Vicky Helms Norris came to the Feb. 16 council meeting unaware what the AMVETS Post 2018 had planned for the night. A group of AMVETS members filed into the council chambers and took their seats, awaiting the moment for public comment. When the moment came, Auxiliary President Cindy Whaley addressed the council.

“You have one councilmember who we feel like goes above and beyond, and I don’t mind saying it, she’s like Santa Claus,” Whaley said. “She’s everywhere. She’s vigilant. She’s out talking to people, she’s recording town videos on the street corner when it’s raining and you’ve got a parade, freezing cold. She works hard for everybody in the community, and I can’t even think of all the things she does.”

Whaley said the post is newer to the community, and Norris has made them feel welcome from the start. To show their appreciation, AMVETS Post 2018 presented Norris with a card, a plaque, flowers, and a Bronze Eagle.

“It’s an honor for me to even be able to do this, so thank you,” said Norris. “Everybody does their part. It takes a village.”

Norris is responsible for town parades and events, and is extremely active in local schools, the Youth Sports Association, and the community.
