AmVets Post 2018 works with Home Depot to help local veteran

ELBERTA - AmVets Post 2018, located in Elberta, recently helped a local veteran in need with assistance from Home Depot. During summer, Hazel Benson, a member of Post 2018, noticed her veteran neighbor having difficulties getting in and out of his RV home. Wanting to help, Benson spoke of the matter with Boy Seyfried, another member of Post 2018. They began searching for a solution.

After looking into different things that could be done, Seyfried learned The Home Depot has a program designed to assist veterans at no cost to them. AmVets Post 2018 Commander Terry Shadowens worked alongside Home Depot and Seyfried to complete the needed paperwork for a grant that could be used to build a ramp at the RV location. The grant was received, and Home Depot provided the materials and labor to build the ramp.

Once complete, Post 2018 member Judi Wheat said: “The veteran was so pleased. Now with the ramp, he can go in and out of his home without the fear of falling. The members at AmVets Post 2018 would like to thank Home Depot for their support of our veterans.”

The Home Depot Foundation’s Veteran Housing Grants Program awards grants to nonprofit organizations to assist with new constructions or rehabilitations for veterans’ homes. For projects that focus on a single home construction or repair, there are Community Impact Grants that can be awarded.

AmVets Post 2018 meets at 25151 State Street, Building C in Elberta on: second Sunday of the month at 1 p.m. (Riders) and the third Monday of each month from 6 - 7 p.m. (AmVets, AmVets Ladies Auxiliary, and Sons of AmVets). For more information, check out amvets2018.org.
