ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Hearing loss is a common problem affecting senior adults.

“It is important for adults to get hearing screenings at least once a year, especially adults over the age of 65,” said Emily Domingue, doctor of audiology with Ascent Audiology & Hearing in Foley. “Studies have shown that untreated hearing loss can lead to Dementia and Alzheimer’s, which can lead to depression, anxiety and memory loss.”

Ascent hosted a Lunch-n-Learn on Wednesday, Sept. 18 for Robertsdale Seniors at the George P. Thames Adult Activity Center.

Domingue, along with colleagues Brandi Snyder and Jessica Bishop, conducted “Pass or Fail” screenings for Robertsdale Seniors. Those who tested for hearing loss were recommended for a full diagnostic evaluation in the audiology clinic.

Ascent operates two locations in Baldwin County, Foley/Gulf Shores, located at 8154 Alabama 59 Suite 202 in Foley; and Fairhope, located at 105 Lottie Lane Suite A.

Testing is conducted not just on hearing loss, but another common problem for senior adults, tinnitus, or ringing in the ears.

According to information provided by Ascent, untreated hearing loss:

•Affects your ability to understand speech and can negatively impact your social and emotional wellbeing.

•Can lead to increase depression, anxiety and social isolation.

•Has been contributed to reduced cognition due to auditory deprivation.

Symptoms of hearing loss can look like dementia, but often when treated, many of these negative symptoms are reversible, Domingue said.

About 5 percent of hearing loss is medically treated, she said, and 95 percent of hearing loss is improved with hearing aids.

“Unlike in the past, insurance companies are now working with patients to pay for screenings and in a lot of cases will work with supplemental insurance to help pay the cost of hearing aids,” Domingue said.
