Tigers get first region win, Dolphins struggle in second half

Posted

GULF SHORES, Ala. — The rebuilding process for the Dolphins football team is making progress but still has some ways to go. Last Friday, the Dolphins hosted a talented Baldwin County High School Tigers team and came up short 38-13.

The game started out rough for Gulf Shores with a fumble on the first offensive play that resulted in a turnover. The Tigers’ drive resulted in a 6-yard touchdown by quarterback Eli Powell.

Gulf Shores then, with their new spread offense, came out firing and scored on a 12-yard Todd Hoover touchdown run.

The Tigers Javis Atchison came back and accounted for a 30-yard vertical touchdown catch in the endzone (his first of two). It was a back-and-forth fight in the first half that resulted in a 21-13 score in the Tigers’ favor. During the first half, Powell experienced a foot injury (broken bone) and will have to miss at least 4 weeks.

The second half for Gulf Shores was rough offensively as they couldn’t get drives going. Quarterback Rett Files tried to push through a tough Tigers defense. Files finished the night with 138 yards on 10 completions (28 attempts) and two interceptions.

The Tigers added 17 points in the second half and closed the game with a 38-13 Class 6A Region 1 win.

Baldwin County running back James Stanley finished with 192 yards and two rushing touchdowns for the Tigers.

The Dolphins’ defense accounted for 10 tackles for loss and 3 sacks from Logan Holland, Garett Newman and Gage Hudson.

The Tigers (2-0) will host the Blount Leopards (2-0) in Bay Minette. Gulf Shores (0-2) will go to Spanish Fort (1-1). This will be Dolphins’ head coach Matt Blake’s first game against the Toros since he left SFHS to lead Gulf Shores. Game starts at 7 p.m.
