Baldwin County schools, offices to remain closed Thursday

Posted

Baldwin County’s public schools will remain closed on Thursday because of cold temperatures and icy conditions.

In a statement sent Wednesday to all BCBE employees, parents, key communicators and media, Baldwin County School Superintendent Eddie Tyler said he made the decision after conferring with the National Weather Service, several Baldwin County officials, including county commissioners, Sheriff Hoss Mack and the county’s road/highway engineer. Schools and administrative offices will be closed Thursday.

“Road conditions are still very icy around the county and weather officials are predicting that temperatures will not get beyond the freezing mark today for the roads to clear,” Tyler said. “I always want to err on the side of caution for our students, employees and families.”

Warming temperatures should improve conditions by Friday, Tyler said.

“While our school buildings are warm, more than half of our student population ride buses and our county is largely rural with a lot of hills and curves,” he said. “While roads may be clear in some areas of the county, I have to make a call for what is safest for the entire school system. Maybe one more day out of school will also help many of our students recover from the abundance of flu.”

Tyler said he will continue to monitor the situation and will keep everyone apprised of any changes.

“Please stay safe and warm. Thankfully, warmer weather is on the way.”
