Baldwin Historic Tours “Tales of the Rails”

The Baldwin County Department of Archives and History put on a bus tour of historic Baldwin on Thursday, April 12. The tour began at the Foley Railroad Museum and rode all the way to Bay Minette, then back again to Foley, following along the old railroad tracks. The tour guide for the event was Harriet Oulaw, author of Haunted Baldwin County and Folklore. During the tour, Oulaw told folk tales from the times when the railroad was in motion, from the ghost of Pearl who haunts the Foley Railroad Museum to the ghosts of the old Loxley Hotel, as well as stories from World War II and the days when most of the area’s population resided in the north part of the county. The tour was created to not only offer knowledge on Baldwin County’s history, but also fun legends and tales known to the locals. There are four more tours being planned in the future, covering all the county in honor of the upcoming 200th Alabama Bicentennial. For more information on upcoming Bicentennial events, check the county’s website at BaldwinCountyAl.gov, or contact Felisha Anderson at 251-580-2572.
