BAY MINETTE, Alabama — A Bay Minette man has been arrested and charged with making a terroristic threat after Sheriff’s officials say he made threats on social media Monday directly related to the mass shooting in Las Vegas over the weekend.

The Bay Minette Police Department and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office received numerous complaints on Monday that a man was on Facebook making threats of violence against the citizens of Bay Minette. The threats were directly related to the mass murder of concert goers in Las Vegas hours earlier.

Law enforcement officers from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation began an investigation into the threats. The suspect was identified as Joel Logan Gilliam, 23, of West Railroad Street in Bay Minette, and the Facebook information was captured by the officers with the assistance of the Alabama Fusion Center.

Deputies signed a warrant for one count of making a terroristic threat, a Class C Felony. Law enforcement officers contacted Gilliam and he was taken into custody without incident, according to a BCSO release issued Tuesday. A search of the residence did not yield any firearms and none have been recovered during the investigation.

Gilliam was interviewed by law enforcement where he confessed to making the statements on his Facebook account. Gilliam told deputies that he was bored and wanted to see how people would react to his Facebook posts. Gilliam showed no remorse in the interview and continually stated the posts were a joke.

Gilliam is being held in the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Corrections Center without bond pending a judicial hearing.
