BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bayside Academy’s Lady Admirals came into the 48th annual AHSAA State Volleyball Championships riding a 16-year winning streak dating back to 2002 but facing a stiff challenge to keep the streak alive after moving to Class 4A this season.

Coach Ann Schilling’s team battled to two victories Wednesday, including a 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 win over Trinity Presbyterian in the Class 4A semifinals to set up a rematch with Providence Christian in the Class 4A championship game Thursday as the state tourney draws to a close.

Providence Christian (48-8), which also moved from 3A to 4A this season, downed Alabama Christian in the other semifinal 25-21, 25-21, 28-26. The Eagles beat Bayside last weekend in the South Super Regional championship match.

Bayside’s streak includes six state titles in Class 2A from 2002-2007 and 10 in Class 3A from 2008-2017. The Lady Admirals also hold the AHSAA state record for most volleyball state championships (26), which includes seven Class 1A state crowns from 1983-1996 and three more 2A titles in 1998-2000. Providence won back-to-back 2A titles in 2011 and 2012.

All seven championship matches will be played at the CrossPlex’s Bill Harris Arena beginning with an all Winston County finals in Class 2A between Winston County High School (33-14) of Double Springs and last year’s 1A state champs Addison (53-10) at 8 a.m. McGill-Toolen Catholic (47-5) will meet Bob Jones in the Class 7A finals at 9:45 a.m. with the Dirty Dozen going for their second 7A crown in a row and the school’s 21st overall.

Saint James (37-10) and Jasper (69-5) will square off in the 5A finals at 11:30 a.m, Spanish Fort (64-5) and Hazel Green (60-11) will meet in the Class 6A finals at 1:15 p.m. The Toros won the 6A state crown in 2015 and the Trojans won in 2016.

Montgomery Academy (37-9) and Carbon Hill (65-6) will battle in the 3A title match at 3 p.m. Pleasant Home (31-5) and Athens Bible (45-10) close out the 2018 State Championships with the 1A finals. Athens Bible reached the championship match with a stunning come-from-behind 17-25, 25-21, 11-25, 25-19, 19-17 victory over Faith Christian in the final match of Wednesday’s competition at the CrossPlex.
