BAY MINETTE, Ala. — The Tigers scored on their first two possessions on drives of 10 and 66 yards for an early lead over Class 7A Alma Bryant. Baldwin County’s offense added another score in the fourth quarter and held off a late Hurricane surge.

Baldwin County head coach Nathan McDaniel was proud of his players.

“It’s always good to get a win, but I’m especially proud of our players for coming off those two losses to Blount and Spanish Fort and then battling right off the bat for the early lead. They showed determination right from the start. Then Alma Bryant tested us, but we kept fighting down ‘til the final play. Very proud of the guys tonight.”

Shavaris Williams set up the first Baldwin County touchdown with a 48-yard interception return to the Hurricanes’ 10-yard line. Chase Overstreet then found Martavious Crook in the end zone for the initial score and Eduardo Rodriguez Garcia hit the first of his three extra points.

Overstreet then connected with Javis Atchinson on the next Tiger TD on a 66-yard scoring pass. BCHS dominated time of possession in the second quarter but could not find pay dirt and took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the fourth quarter Overstreet tossed a five-yard jump-ball, TD pass to Jontae French to cap a 67-yard, clock-eating drive with 4:58 left remaining in the game.

Bryant rallied late and went for the Hail-Mary pass in the end zone but the Tiger defense knocked it down for the homecoming win.

McDaniel said several of his players were not full strength due to a recent cold bug. Overstreet also played hurt much of the game.

“Chase actually picked up an injury in the second quarter that affected his throwing, but he hung in there and battled and was able to make some key plays for us.

“But it did put more pressure on our defense the rest of the night forcing them to play a lot of snaps. So, credit them with keeping us ahead at the end.

“Bryant never quit and I have the utmost respect for their players and coaching staff,” he added. “For the way they battled back into it, but just so proud of how we hung in there for the win.”

Alma Bryant scored on a five-yard keeper by ‘Cane quarterback Ry’Jai Bowie and later with a 28-yard TD pass from Dylan Nealy to Bowie with two minutes, 13 seconds left in the game. Bowie got off one last deep pass from midfield, but the Tiger secondary knocked it down.

Baldwin County (3-2) travels next to Robertsdale for another Class 6A Region 1 showdown on Oct. 6. Kick off at Sellars Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
