BCHS holds Black History Month program

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Baldwin County High School had a very special – and familiar – keynote speaker at its Black History Month program: Taylor Culliver.

A 2011 graduate of BCHS, Culliver was the valedictorian of his class and held numerous leadership roles while a student and earned numerous accolades and awards.

He went on to a Bachelor of Science in economics degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Culliver worked for Forbes to help launch the Forbes Under 30 and now lives in South Carolina where he works as a marketing strategist for Polyphonic & Co.

Last year, he started a non-profit called Brother Box that aims to encourage and uplift young black men. Brother Box's mission is to give black middle and high school boys the advice and encouragement they need to stay focused, care for themselves, lift others up, and be proud of who they are. Last year, the non-profit delivered 100 Brother Boxes to students in Bay Minette area schools.

Following his presentation to the full student body, Culliver met with students selected by the faculty to offer these same words of encouragement. During the casual chat, he asked them about their struggles and role models. He encouraged the students to seek out help when they faced obstacles and to be their own advocate. Each student was also presented with their very own Brother Box.

Each Brother Box includes a variety of items such as a book, socks, tie, headphones (with a "Brother Box Beats" Custom Spotify Playlist), small journal, deodorant, face wash, lotion, snacks and a handwritten note of advice and encouragement.
