BMES hosts ribbon cutting for Big Brother Big Sister room

BAY MINETTE, Alabama — A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new Big Brother Big Sister room at Bay Minette Elementary. Principal Dr. Zack Wigstrom set aside the classroom space for Bigs and Littles to hang out during their weekly visits.

The room received a makeover – paint, curtains and décor – from CityHope Church volunteers. The room was then stocked with new games, puzzles, toys and books through a grant written by teacher Pam Hartner and funded by the North Baldwin Coalition for Excellence in Education.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters program is currently serving Bay Minette Elementary and Bay Minette Intermediate schools by matching mentors (“Bigs”) with students (“Littles”) as part of a school-based mentoring program. Many of those volunteers hail from Standard Furniture and North Baldwin Infirmary, both of which are BBBS corporate sponsors and allows employees to serve as Bigs on company time. There are also several individuals from the community volunteering as mentors with the program.

There is a growing list of Littles still waiting on a match. If you are interested in signing up as a Big Brother or Big Sister visit bbbssa.org.
