Christmas is fast approaching and before you can shake like “a bowl full of jelly,” Old Saint Nick will be squeezing down chimneys all along the Gulf Coast bringing presents to good little golfing boys and girls.
So you have to ask yourself “What does my favorite player really want?” and “Where do I go to shop?” You may hear subtle hints at first. A new putter made out of left-over mashed potatoes, or a driver spelled out with pasta might show up on their dinner plate. There might be brochures left in plain sight.
As the blessed event draws near, friends could offer a few suggestions. Whatever the method, the signals are clear; your honey wants new golf gear.
Not to worry because even if you don’t know your “Ping from your bling” I’ve got you covered. I’ve stayed up late visiting golf shops and surfing the net to be sure you get just the right gift this season.

These lists will give you a head start on the season, but if your golfer already has more gear than Bubba, here’s an idea. Pick up a golf package for rounds or lessons at your favorite links. Many courses offer seasonal specials if you buy multi rounds. The Robert Trent Jones Trail has a “Trail Card” that’s good for discounts all over Alabama, and many charities put together similar cards.
Last but, not least here are a few helpful hints. If you purchase a golf club or set, it is important to pick the correct shaft flex. A simple way to find out is to ask their golfing buddy, or look in his or her golf bag at a similar club. The label on the shaft should have a small letter like an R for regular, or S for stiff. Don’t worry if you get it wrong, just be sure to save the receipt and you can make an exchange after Christmas.
I hope this answers many of your questions about what to buy, where to shop and how much it costs. Happy shopping and have a very merry Christmas.
Help us stay in touch with the vibrant Coastal golf community. If you have an upcoming charity golf outing, an interesting golf story or you are a new golf professional, I’d like hear from you.
