Communities are showing their support for critical service workers everywhere, without ever even leaving their front yard. Be it standing outside, driving through your neighborhood in your vehicle, or even joining the celebration from behind a screened porch, there are plenty of ways people can show their support for essential workers without leaving their homes.

The trend in our area began when Linda Spangrud read about Paris citizens opening their windows and going onto balconies to shout out their support for critical service workers and each other. She thought the idea would be great to do, anywhere. After reaching out to some friends, the group decided to spend Sunday nights in April showing their support for essential workers and fellow community members.

Community members were encouraged to yell, whistle, honk, ring bells, bang pots, play music, and celebrate our critical service workers and bring our communities closer together during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There are so many of these workers who need this support,” Spangrud said. “We have doctors and nurses on the front lines, but then there’s also police officers, firefighters, retail and restaurant workers, and truck drivers.”
