FOLEY - The City of Foley has revealed its December tax revenues, marking the first three months down in the current fiscal year. Currently, the city is outperforming last year’s budget, and according to officials, by a good number.

“Year to date, for example, our sales tax is almost 17 percent above last year’s,” said City Administrator Mike Thompson. “Lodging tax is over 90 percent above last year, rental tax is 40 percent above last year, and then gas tax is about flat, it’s actually slightly down by about two percent. The point is that we’re outperforming pretty dramatically.”

Thompson stressed that the numbers from December 2020 were being compared to the numbers from December 2019, meaning they were pre-COVID months of revenue. He says that’s good news for the community, showing that the local economy is going strong.

“You look at it from a budget perspective, of course we’re above our budget,” he said. “Although I will say if you look at the budgeted numbers for 2021 we budgeted lower than what we brought in during 2020. That was because we weren’t sure what to expect with the pandemic, but all in all these are good numbers.”
