ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Competitors from throughout Alabama, as well as Georgia and Florida, will once again converge on the Baldwin County Fairgrounds Arena in Robertsdale Dec. 2-3 when the Alabama Junior High Rodeo Association and the Alabama High School Rodeo Association hosts its annual competition.

At its meeting Nov. 6, the Robertsdale City Council agreed to give a $1,000 donation to help support the event.

Ashleigh Clukey, a junior at Robertsdale High School, who serves as the Alabama High School Rodeo Association’s Queen for 2017-18, addressed the council at Monday’s meeting.

Area high school rodeo participants will also be on hand at the Arena on Friday, Dec. 1 hosting students with challenges from throughout the area, giving them a chance to see what it’s like to participate in several events.

Saturday’s competition begins with the Alabama Junior Rodeo Association competition in the morning, followed by the beginning of the AHSRA competition in the afternoon and continuing Sunday morning. There will be a general admission charge for the two days of competition. Friday’s event is free.

The two-day, two-go event is sanctioned by the Alabama High School Rodeo Association and co-sponsored by Bo Campbell Rodeo Productions.

According to its website, ahsra.org, the Alabama High School Rodeo Association is a member of the National High School Rodeo Association headquartered in Denver. Membership is limited to students 19 years old or younger and enrolled in the ninth through 12th grades.

More than 100 competitors from throughout the state, along with competitors from Georgia and Florida, participate in high school rodeo competitions throughout the state.

The high school rodeo season begins in September and includes monthly events, culminating with the AHSRA State Finals Rodeo in June. Rodeo events include cutting, bareback and saddle bronc riding, breakaway calf roping, pole bending, steer wrestling, goat tying, team roping, barrel racing and bull riding.

Contestants compete for points throughout the season with the top four point earners in each event qualifying to represent Alabama at the National High School Finals Rodeo.

Students can join anytime throughout the season. There is no deadline for membership. Competitors at the high school level go on to compete in colleges throughout the country.

Robertsdale’s own Kyle Irwin, son of Robertsdale Council member Ruthie Campbell, was among those to compete and earned scholarships at Western Oklahoma College and Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He will again compete in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas this year.

The Alabama Junior Rodeo Association (ajhsra.com) is a member of the National High School Rodeo’s Junior High Division and is open to students in grades 6 through 8 who are under 16 years old.

In other business Nov. 6, the Council:

•Approved the use of the Baldwin County Coliseum by the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce for 2018. The council also agreed to advertise the events on the city’s digital billboard.

•Reappointed Steve Williams, Herman Harville, Debbie Newbort and Jonathan Kitchens to the city’s Zoning Board of Adjustments.

•Adopted Resolution 009-17 to apply for a 2018 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant through the Alabama Department of Transportation for the construction of sidewalks in the city.
