DAPHNE, Ala. — The Thompson boys and the McGill-Toolen Catholic girls claimed cross-county titles at the Daphne Invitational at Al Trione Park Saturday morning. It was a homecoming for former Daphne and Spanish Fort CC coach Chris Schmidt who now leads the Thompson program.
Individually Grace Jensen of McGill-Toolen Catholic led the varsity girls to the tape with a 19-minute, 33-second finish, Daphne's own Mandaline Thomas was second in 20:53 followed by three more Mc-T Yellow Jackets in order: (3) Frieda Kickliter (21:19), (4) Anna Bulman (21:55) and (5) Claire Frazier Bolton. The top-10 was rounded out by Olivia Andrews of Faith Academy (22:19), Kaelyn Horn of St. Luke’s Episcopal (22:20), Heather Smith of Mary G. Montgomery (22:32), Nicole Luther of Daphne (22:36) and Madelyn Wells of Robertsdale (22:41).
The four top-10 and 11th-place (Claire Mattlingly) runs by the Mc-T girls led to a 24-75 winning score over Thompson’s female team. Daphne’s Lady Trojans led by Thomas and Luther were third ahead of county neighbor Robertsdale 96-123. Faith was fifth with 134.
Lee, a sophomore, clocked a 16:38 to pace the boys varsity 5K followed by THS teammate Jacob Wyatt (17:42) and Caleb Smith of MGM (18:00) in third. Mc-T's John Paul Williams was fourth (18:26), Chandler Ferguson and Morgan Phillips of Thompson were a stride-for-stride fifth, sixth and seventh (18:41) with John Patrick Dalton of McGill-Toolen (18:41), (8) Ethan Steed of Saraland (18:44), (9) David Ericson of UMS-Wright (19:04) and (10) Thomas Cousins of Thompson (19:13).
A five top-10 performance by the Warriors’ boys turned into a winning margin of 24-65 over the Yellow Jackets for Thompson. The Bulldogs of UMS-Wright took third with a 90-99 point win past M.G.M. while Daphne was fifth with 127.
Tyler Priest of Baldwin County won the JV boys race in 18:41, Joseph Perry of UMS-Wright was second (19:47) and Grainger Rathle of Mc-T was third (20:05).
Jeanne Marie Garriz of Mc-T won the girls JV run in 24:20, Daphne’s Sarah Santa Cruz was second (24:28) and Brenda Ellis was a close third (24:29) for UMS-Wright.
