• Godwin hits two grand slams in P.I. Showdown, Trojans hosting Class 6A, Area 2 tournament

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, Daphne High went 7-2 last week to improve to 39-5 overall for 2017. The Trojans defeated Mary G. Montgomery and Davidson during the week.

At the Pleasure Island Showdown in Gulf Shores, the Trojans finished in second place. They beat Class 4A No. 2 ranked Alabama Christian twice, Enterprise twice, and Faith Academy. The two losses both came against 7A Baker.


For the week, Karsen Pierce went 14-25 with two doubles, two triples, eight RBIs, and seven runs. Kennedy Cronan went 14-27 with six doubles, one home run, twelve RBIs, and twelve runs. Aspyn Godwin went 11-24 with a double, two grand slams, nine RBIs, and twelve runs. Reagan Watkins went 11-24 with a double, a triple, two homers, twelve RBIs, and nine runs. MC Sweatt went 13-29 with two doubles, six RBIs, and seven runs.


Watkins (16-3) went 3-1 for the week with 39 strikeouts (194 for the season). She pitched 21.2 innings with a no-hitter against Enterprise and two wins over Alabama Christian.

Makenna Pierce (19-2) went 3-1 last week with 21 strikeouts (147 for the season). She pitched 21.1 innings with wins over Mary G. Montgomery, Enterprise, and Faith Academy. Karsen Pierce (4-0) pitched four innings and struck out two in the win over Davidson.


Daphne will host their Area 2 tournament which is set to start Wednesday, May 3 at 3:30 p.m. with Gulf Shores and Baldwin County High starting off the double-elimination brackets. The tournament continues Thursday and Friday. The Area 2 final is set for 5:30 p.m. May 5 with an if-necessary game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
