DAPHNE, Ala. -- Daphne High School held a meet and greet for the Trojans’ new head baseball coach Brent Boyd who shared his vision and specific plans for the program. The DHS Administration and Athletic Department announced the hiring earlier last week.

Coach Kenny King, Daphne High School’s Athletic Director said Boyd comes by coaching and teaching naturally with his mother having a career as a special education teacher and his father having a long tenure as a football coach and superintendent of a large metropolitan school district in Texas.

“We are extremely excited to have this opportunity for such a high caliber coach to lead our baseball program. Coach Boyd is undoubtedly one of the very best coaches in the state. It will be a fantastic opportunity for Daphne players going forward to play for him,” King added.

Boyd said he was excited to lead the Trojans who have all the building blocks returning next year to make the playoffs again and go deep in the postseason. He also laid out his basic coaching and teaching philosophy at the meeting.

“I have been impressed with the tradition that is already here and the work ethic of Daphne players (as an opposing coach) and want to build on that. I want to establish ground rules that are based on personal responsibility and accountability. That’s for coaches as well as players.

“Playing time will be earned. You earn it with performance at practice and in a game. I want to thank all the people who showed an interest in me the last couple of weeks. My wife and I appreciate the hospitality from everyone involved.”

Boyd was a collegiate baseball success at the University of Alabama where he was named UA Athlete of the Year as well as the SEC Tournament MVP. He took over at Spanish Fort after Tommy Walker led the program from the school’s opening as a 2A, then 5A and now 6A program. Boyd left SFHS with an overall record of 190-60.

Dr. Meredith Foster, Daphne High Principal, described this as a pivotal hire.

“Coach Boyd has tremendous charisma and a proven track record of success. He is a leader and a winner. His commitment to develop the potential of high school players and give them lifelong skills for success as well as opportunities to play at the next level is a very desirable quality. No wonder those who know him well have been so supportive of this move.”

Boyd takes over from Mike Goff, who resigned after leading the Trojans to the 2018 Class 6A playoffs.
