Daphne holds Purple vs. Gold spring game

DAPHNE, Ala. -- Summer is almost here for schools and their athletic programs. For high school football teams, it is just a continuation towards building for the fall. The Daphne Trojans held their annual Purple vs. Gold Spring Jamboree Friday including a scrimmage to showcase their talent to fans and to further evaluate position battles.

In a conversation with head coach Kenny King afterwards, he mentioned that the biggest thing is wanting to see the guys to come in and compete.

“We wanted to see what some of our young guys can do and we know what some of our older guys can do. We wanted to see if some guys can step up and understand {how) it feels to be under the lights.”

One of the main storylines going into the jamboree was the open quarterback competition. Throughout the game, sophomore quarterback Trent Battle was testing the defense on his dual-threat abilities. He finished the game throwing for 40 yards on three completions (seven attempts) and rushing for 54 yards on 11 rushes and two rushing touchdowns.

Senior Quarterback Gage Bonner passed for 82 yards on five completions (seven attempts). Coach King acknowledged that each quarterback has a favorable attribute that distinguishes them well with the offense but also realizes that they have areas to get better in.

Alabama Crimson Tide commit and senior Cornerback Christian Williams played in the fourth quarter where freshman and position battles were taking place. Williams had three tackles and a pass breakup. Coach King complemented Williams after the game.

“He is the most athletic kid we've had around. I mean he can do a lot. He can play offense, defense and his main position at cornerback. He has so much potential to do great things here at Daphne his senior year and also at the next level. Being a former Crimson Tide player myself, I really want to see what he can do up there and do great things.”

The Trojans will take their evaluations and notes on the jamboree into summer where they will fix up the final systematics of their team. Their first game of the 2018 season will be at home against the Theodore Bobcats on Aug. 24.
