FOLEY - A brown bag lunch presentation will be made at the Foley Public Library on Wed, Feb. 13 at 11:30 am. John R. Weaver II, a nationally known expert on masonry coastal fortifications, will present “Defending Mobile Bays – Forts Morgan & Gaines.” This particular presentation will detail the design and construction of Fort Morgan & Gaines. It will also cover the controversial history regarding the construction of Fort Gaines and will touch on the battles for these two forts.

Weaver is the author of the critically acclaimed book, A Legacy in Brick and Stone: Coastal Defense Forts of the American Third System, 1816-1867. This book is now available in a hardbound, full-color, greatly expanded Second Edition. Weaver has also written three book chapters and numerous technical articles related to the Third System of coastal defense. He consults with National Park Service and several state organizations, training staff and volunteers on fortification technology, and assists in the development of interpretive displays.

Weaver gives presentations around the country to both technical and non-technical audiences. He is currently working with Ravelin Films in the production of a series of television documentaries about forts of the 1816-1867 time period.

Seating is limited for this presentation so reservations are required. Please call 251-943-7665 to reserve a seat. Please bring a brown bag lunch - drinks will be provided.
