Donald Eugene "Gene" Shoemaker, 82, passed away at his home in Foley on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017.

Gene was predeceased by his parents, George and Opal Shoemaker.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Loretta Shoemaker. They were married on June 4, 1975.

Gene is also lovingly remembered by his sister, Rosie Resmondo of Perdido Beach; stepdaughters, Sandra Staimpel (husband, Richard Staimpel), Sylvia Weeks, Kathy Lancaster (husband, Gary Lancaster) and Deborah Amos; and loving step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Gene was born in Foley, Alabama on Dec. 17, 1934. He graduated from Foley High School in 1953 and went on to join the United States Air Force from December 1956-January 1963 as an Air Force police officer.

After serving his country, Gene retired from Scott Paper Co. in Mobile, Alabama after 31 years.

Gene enjoyed spending time with his family, watching sports, reading books and newspapers.

The visitation will be held at Pine Rest Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Foley on Friday, Feb. 17, 2017 at 1 p.m.

The funeral service with Pastor Keith Ringers of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Elberta will follow at 2 p.m.
