ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Two dreams melded into one local business and now owners Dixie Overby and Evelyn Clem are celebrating one year of serving families at Divas and Dudes Salon in Robertsdale.

“We just want to thank our families, friends and all our customers for making this year a success,” Overby said, “and we know with their support we’ll have many more years of success here.”

Overby, a native of Robertsdale and a graduate of Robertsdale High School, moved to Gulf Shores soon after high school and worked in several local salons before opening her own business a half-block off the beach several years ago.

“I always dreamed of coming back here and opening my own shop in my hometown,” she said.

Every day, she said, in traveling from her home in Robertsdale to her shop in Gulf Shores, she would pass by the quaint little building at 23553-A Highway 59, across from Cockrell’s Bodyshop in Robertsdale and thought it would be the perfect place.

“For years I passed by and the building was always occupied,” she said, “so I never really got the opportunity.”

But about a year ago, Overby noticed that the building was for rent. Little did she know that Clem, whom she had worked with for 2 ½ years, also had her eye on the space.

“I always thought it was a cool little spot,” said Clem, a native of Prattville who has been in the salon business for 28 years.

So when the two friends found out that they both had their eye on the same location, they came up with a novel idea.

“Why don’t we go into business together?” Clem said.

With the help of family and friends, Clem and Overby completely renovated the business inside and out, transforming it into a two-seat, full service salon for the whole family.

“The previous owner had been here for 13 years, so the building needed a lot of work before we could move in,” Overby said.

The end result was a business that has the look of a classic diner, complete with movie posters and photos of Marilyn Monroe and other mega-celebrities from the 1950s.

“We’re a full-service salon, everything from children to adults, men and women,” Clem said. “We also do up-dos for proms, weddings, parties, Mardi Gras, whatever the occasion.”

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are appreciated. Call Dixie or Evelyn at (251) 947-0999.
