PERDIDO, Alabama — Two juveniles were arrested Tuesday after officials shut down Interstate 65 in both directions near Perdido for nearly two hours when one of the juveniles failed to comply with deputies orders to vacate the vehicle.

At around 2 p.m. Tuesday a deputy with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Operations Unit got behind a 2007 Toyota Prius traveling north on I-65 near the 44-mile marker, said Capt. Clint Cadenhead with the BCSO Investigations Command.

The deputy ran the tag and discovered the vehicle was reported stolen out of Shreveport, Louisiana, so proceeded to conduct a felony traffic stop on the vehicle.

“They were able to get the driver out of the vehicle, but the passenger would not comply with deputies’ commands and stayed in the vehicle,” Cadenhead said.

The driver told deputies there were two firearms in the glovebox of the vehicle and despite repeated orders from deputies to exit the vehicle, the passenger never acknowledged or communicated with deputies.

“We’re not sure what he was thinking,” Cadenhead said. “He told deputies later that he was asleep and did not know they were there.”

When the passenger remained in the vehicle, Cadenhead said, the SWAT team was activated with the use of an armored rescue vehicle.

“At that point it became a barricaded gunman situation,” Cadenhead said. “With the use of the armored vehicle, the SWAT team was able to communicate with the passenger and get him out of the vehicle and into custody.”

In all the incident shut down the Interstate in both directions for about two hours, Cadenhead said.

The two occupants were both juveniles and had escaped from a juvenile detention center in Louisiana.  They were taken to the juvenile detention center in Bay Minette and charged with receiving stolen property for the stolen car; receiving stolen property for the two stolen guns; possession of marijuana and active pick-up orders out of Louisiana.

The juveniles will eventually be transferred back to Louisiana.
