Pirates clinch home-field advantage with win over Hornets

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Fairhope Pirates (8-1) clinched a spot in the 7A state playoffs last Friday in a 42-21 win over the Alma Bryant High School Hurricanes (3-6). Last Friday was also homecoming night for Fairhope High School as Caroline Davis took home the title of 2017 Fairhope Homecoming Queen.

The defense for the Pirates was efficient against the quarterback-option scheme of the Hurricanes. The Pirates’ defense allowed a total of 258 yards from the Hurricanes offense. At times, it seemed that the Hurricanes play calling was easily predictable with most of their runs involving a Quarterback option run up the middle. This made penetrating the backfield easy for the Pirates defense which had six tackles for loss and 3 sacks. Brady Smart accounted for two sacks including one at the end of the opening drive of the game.

Wesley Baumhower, the son of former Alabama Crimson Tide and Miami Dolphins defensive linemen Bob Baumhower, accounted for six solo tackles and a sack. There were six players on the FHS defense that had a tackle for loss.

The Pirates offense didn’t need four receiving touchdowns from C.J. Edwards like they did the previous week at Murphy. Quarterback Devin Mitchell accounted for six completions (out of 12 attempts) for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Mitchell was also a rushing threat to Alma Bryant by rushing for 18 yards and scoring a 7-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.

Edwards had three receptions for 68 yards and two touchdowns and Ramone Bradley caught three passes for 68 yards. Jackson Turner also caught a touchdown pass from Mitchell of 17-yards. Bryson Martin accounted for 32 yards on five carries and a touchdown of 26 yards in the first drive of the third quarter. Brett Howell also had a touchdown in the wildcat scheme in the third quarter. The Pirates’ offensive line did a tremendous of pushing the drives and dominating the Hurricanes defense. They did not allow a sack and only allowed a tackle for loss from Alma Bryant late in the game.

The Fairhope Pirates will now prepare for a huge 7A Region 1 title showdown against McGill-Toolen Catholic’s Yellow Jackets (9-0) in Fairhope.
