Rams run over Golden Bears to spoil Homecoming

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — The Faith Christian Academy Rams spoiled the Robertsdale Golden Bears Homecoming with a 23-12 victory Friday night at J.D. Sellars Stadium.

The Rams held the Bears to just 41 plays offensively, keeping the ball on the ground for 190 yards on 50 carries. Golden Bear quarterback Tristian Stevens accounted for 37 of the Bears offensive plays, completing 9 of 22 passes for 148 yards.

The game was a see-saw battle in the first half with the Rams taking a 3-0 lead on a 30-yard fieldgoal by Brunson M. Watt with 3 minutes to play in the opening period.

One of the few bright spots offensively for the Bears was a 94-yard pass play from Stevens to Romaro Settles that gave the Bears their only lead of the contest with 10:05 to play in the half, but Miguel Castaneda’s PAT was blocked, leaving the score at 6-3.

The Rams would take back the lead with just over 2 minutes to play in the half, scoring from a yard out on fourth down with quarterback James Joseph Flynn V taking the ball in himself. The PAT missed its mark to leave the score at 9-6 with 2:19 to play in the half.

The Bears would negate another scoring opportunity for the Rams with time running out in the half when Settles intercepted a pass from Caulin Stefan Lacy at the Bear 5-yard line.

The score would remain 9-6 until just over 5 minutes to play in the third quarter, set up by a 25-yard punt return from Lacy. Two plays later, Lacy would run it in from 13 yards out and Watt’s PAT put the Rams up 16-6 with 5:05 left in the third quarter.

Things went from bad to worse for the Bears, who fumbled the ensuing kickoff return and the Rams returned the ball 25 yards for the score, with Watt chipping in the point-after to give Faith Academy a 25-6 lead with 4:52 to play in the third.

The Bears only other score of the game came with 31 seconds left, driving 78 yards in eight plays. Once again it was Stevens who would take the load for the Bears, completing 3 of 5 passes for 66 yards and running twice for 12 yards, including a one-yard run for the score. The Bears failed to convert a two-point try to leave the score at 23-12.

Robertsdale had two tries to complete an onside kick, receiving a 5-yard penalty when the first try failed to go 10 yards, but both were covered up by the Rams, who took a knee to end the game.

Chase Smith’s Golden Bears (1-5, 1-3) will try to get their second win of the season on Friday, traveling to Trimmier Park in Mobile to take on the winless 6A Region 1 foe B.C. Rain Raiders.
