Father-son face drug charges following I-10 traffic stop

A father and his underage son were arrested Tuesday after more than 115 pounds of crystal meth was found inside battery compartments in golf carts they were hauling on Interstate 10.

Donald Scott Sells, 43, of Connell, Washington, is in jail on a $300,000 bond, charged with drug trafficking, while his 15-year-old son was taken to the Baldwin County Juvenile Detention Center on second degree possession of marijuana charges.

The pair were arrested Wednesday after Baldwin County Sheriff Deputies assigned to the Special Operation Unit stopped the Ford F150 Sells was driving for no plainly visible tag. He was pulling a flatbed trailer eastbound at the 56 mile marker, three miles east of the Wilcox Road Exit of Interstate 10.

According to a release issued Thursday by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, the trailer contained two golf carts. During conversation both Sells and his son gave conflicting statements.

Sells gave the deputies permission to conduct a search of his vehicle and trailer during which eight heavy duty vehicle batteries were discovered in the golf carts in a factory battery compartment under the seats; however, their weight was inconsistent with the typical weight of a vehicle battery.

All eight vehicle batteries were found to contain contraband. Deputies recovered 32 bundles of crystal methamphetamine weighing approximately 115 pounds.
