Federal Agents raid Gulf Shores doctor’s office

On July 11 federal agents executed search warrants on Dr. James H. Edwards psychiatry offices in Opelika and Gulf Shores. United States Marshalls took Dr. Edwards into custody at his Opelika office.

Edwards was charged by a federal grand jury in the Middle District of Alabama with three counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance on July 17.

These charges followed a year-long investigation by the Board of Medical Examiners that resulted in a settlement reached in January, 2019. The settlement included restrictions on his prescribing practices. During the inquiry, Edwards was found to have prescribed excessive dosages and amounts of stimulant medication; prescribe excessive dosages and amounts from the same class of medication; prescribed hazardous excessive doses of medication to patients.

Edward’s was placed on 24-months probation and was given 120 days to reduce the daily controlled substances ADHD treatment regimen for each current patient.

On July 15 Edwards Voluntarily surrendered his Alabama medical license and Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate.
