First Publix SuperCup held at FSTC

Posted

With over 200 games, 17 playing fields and well over hundreds of players and coaches participating, the Publix SuperCup hosted at the new Foley Sports Tourism Complex was one of the biggest girls soccer tournaments on the Gulf Coast. This tournament was the first at the new complex at Foley and the first of a line of tournaments every weekend until Thanksgiving. Soccer clubs and academy teams from Louisiana and Mississippi participated, as well as several local teams from Daphne, Fairhope, Mobile and Huntsville. Gulf Breeze Perdido and Pensacola also had teams in the match.

There were 11 different age classifications for the participating teams. Five of the 11 age groups have a first and a second division for their teams. Under 11, under 12, under 13, under 14 and under 15 were the age groups that had multiple divisions. The remaining group age groups only had one team or division with those being under 9/10, under 10, under 16, under 16/17, under 17 and under 18/19.

The Gulf Coast has been a venue for soccer enthusiasts and for the sport of soccer in general. Orange Beach has been a hosting city for collegiate women’s soccer where multiple SEC tournaments and key neutral site games have taken place. Foley has also played a role in soccer tournaments, but more so for the participants below the collegiate ranks.

College scouts and coaches were among the spectators of the Publix SuperCup; one from the University of Mobile and one from the University of South Alabama Jaguars women’s soccer team. And, of course, parents were there to cheer on their child playing in these games and promote good sportsmanship to other teams and players.

In the under 9/10 age group final, the Gulf South Soccer Club 07/08 beat the Daphne Strike Academy 08 6-1. The Gulf South SC beat two local teams with a 5-1 and 8-2 score. In the under 10 age group final, the FC Dallas Emerald Coast beat the Firebirds of Houma, Louisiana, with a 3-1 score.

The Brilla Juniors Legend 06G Flowood of Clinton, Mississippi, beat the Mobile United FC 06 Girls Black with a 6-1 score in the first division. In the second division of the under 11 age group, the Gulf South SC 06 Girls beat the MS Rush 06G Madison Elite of Madison, Mississippi, with a 2-1 score. The Bay United Soccer Club of Panama City, shutout the 05G Louisiana Fire LP Red with a 4-0 score.

In the first division of the under 14 age group, the Huntsville FC Girls 03 Blue beat the Capitol City Streaks 03 Girls Elite of Montgomery with a 2-0 score. This was a rematch from a 1-1 tied matchup on Saturday. In the first division of the under 15 age group, the 02G Louisiana Fire Red of Kenner, Louisiana, beat the Chivas FC of Southwest Florida with a 3-1 score. In the second division, the Alliance FC 02/03 Girls beat the Gulf Coast Texans 02 Girls Red of Pensacola with a 3-0 score. In the under 16 age group final, the Slidell Youth Soccer Club beat the Perdido Bay FC 01/02 with a 4-1 score. Finally, in the under 16/17 age group, the Huntsville Futbol Club 01 Girls Blue beat the Gulf Coast Rangers Football Club 01 Girls Red with a shutout score of 3-0.

With the busy weekend the new Foley Sports Tourism Complex hosted, there is no doubt more tournaments will arrive once the finishing touches on the complex are complete.

The Publix SuperCup Boys Tournament will be next weekend, Sept. 17 and 18.
