• Madison field goal lifts Lions to league win over Hornets

Posted

FOLEY, Ala. — Friday night's homecoming contest between the Baker Hornets and Foley Lions at Ivan Jones Stadium was a wet affair after constant rain bombarded the area for much of the afternoon. Luckily for both teams, the clouds parted just in time for kickoff.

The Lions (5-4) won a sloppy, defensive game over reeling Baker (2-7) with a 20-yard field goal by Logan Madison early in the fourth quarter to take a 10-7 victory.

Wide receiver Christian Blackwell had a huge night for Foley as he logged 7 catches for 126 yards and the team's lone touchdown.

On the other end of that touchdown pass was quarterback Garrett Mayo, who had a decent night himself. He completed 20 of 38 passes for 264 yards, the touchdown pass and one interception.

For the Hornets, the game plan revolved completely around the running game, which played right into the strength of the Lions defense. Baker was only able to produce 172 total yards of offense on the night, with 135 of that coming in the run game.

Running back Fernando Billups provided Baker's only score with an impressive 27-yard run from a wildcat quarterback formation. Fellow back Joshua Pruitt provided some good thunder to Billups' lightning as he logged 80 rushing yards of his own.

Foley's defense must be commended for the work they put in against the ground attack of Baker. The stingy unit forced a total of 15 plays that went for 0 yards or fewer on the night.

Foley stays home this week to host Theodore (5-4) in a game with huge playoff implications, as both teams need the win to qualify. Baker will be back at home to host Mary Montgomery (0-10).
